in other news

I've been mentioning it here in little snippets, but it's all official now (well, it was last Friday - but been a bit busy since then doing other stuff). So, we have SOLD our house. In less than a week, how amazing is that. We had the first open for inspection on a Saturday, and an offer in on the Thursday night.
A lovely young(ish - you compared to old 35-yr Sam and 31-yr me!!) couple, who have lots of ideas (and the funds) to do this old (at least 70+ yrs old) house some justice. We already told them that we'd come and check it out in a year or so.
So, we have to be out of here in about 7 or 8 days. Have we started packing. As if, no way! Why would we want to start doing something like so early. We want to do that at the last minute, hey. We did already pack up half our stuff and move it to a storage place (to make the house look less "cluttered" for open inspections). But, we still do have a lot a lot a lot of stuff. We've been living here for about 7 or so years (more, can't remember now), and have the accumulated junk that comes with not moving too often.
In our new house I will have my own little sewing studio. I'm calling it a studio, rather than a sewing room - sounds much more fun. It is little, but I think it has lots of good light. I'm dreaming about it. Oh, the possibilities. The excitement.
Currently I have my sewing table in the corner of our living room. And it's simply not enough for me to have my thinking space and creative space and try and run a business in as well. So, good things ahead.
Please help me out with dreams for my new studio. I'd love thoughts and ideas on what works for you in a smallish space, for multi crafting, and to accommodate kids, and a guest bed. I'd love links to inspirational photos. So, if you have a great room yourself, or have been dreaming similar dreams of your own room, please speak up.
I took these photos the other day, when the kids + I had lunch in the backyard. Despite all my wishings it was different, this house has been good to us. And I know how lucky we have been.

For those of you in Brisbane, make sure you get to the Portside Boutique markets on Sunday. Peppermint will be there, selling issue 3 and subscriptions. As well as many of the beautiful BrisStylettes with their wares. At last I'll be able to look around and see it all, being on the other side of the market table will be nice. Oh, and did I mention there'll be a coffee + chocolate festival too.

  1. Well... I can highly recommend peg-board! Stick some up around the studio so you can keep lots of stuff just at arm's length but up out of the way.

Oh and I'd also go for a trip to Ikea. Even if you don't want to buy anything there (perhaps you would prefer second-hand or not mass-produced stuff) there are lots of great ideas for small spaces and storage that looks good, fold-up beds etc. We have an Ikea fold-out lounge thing with a really decent mattress in our living/sewing/guest/dining room! It folds in and out in a blink.

Congratulations Ellie!! That is incredible how fast your home sold. I wish I was ready to start setting up my new studio as we could inspire each other as we go. It still needs a floor though, and we won't officially move for some time. My room is also pretty small. It has a pretty wide closet though, and one of the things we plan to do is build shelving in it to maximize on materials storage which can also be concealed by closing the doors. I have the thought that I'd also like to create a table that can collapse flat against the wall if/when not in use. Maybe for layout, pinning, sketching, planning, etc. I will be sure to share any ideas I come up with!

  4. Dear Ellie!
Congrats on selling the house and even BIGGER congrats on the studio. Sounds great. Even if it`s small it`s your own!! I have a very ( and I mean VERY ) small work room / studio and the most important thing for me was to have a big enough desk to house both my computer and work stuff ( lots of documents) as well as space for my metal work, felting etc. So I have 2 desks placed in a corner with the computer in the middle ( the acual corner) and one desk along one wall for office things and the other desk along the other wall for creative things. With the desk placed in a corner it gives me more floor space. I lined the walls with shelfs, raw board on consoles and bought tons of white cardboard boxes at IKEA for all my fabric, yarn etc. I think having all the boxes in the same color gives a calming effect. I have all kinds of glass yars for my buttons, lace, pearls and stuff because it inspires me and is beautiful just to look at. With my big desk and all my shelfs the floor is free from clutter and I with the boxes labeled I know where everything is.

Good luck with your studio planing!

PS I agree with Gina. I think IKEA is a good place to start...and that is not just because I am Swedish :-)

  7. Congratulations on your quick sale. A studio is a far off dream for me.... I have just gotten off the dinning room table. I'm sure you'll come up with something beautiful and functional.

I love the photos by the way. Playing with the kids in the sun in the back yard in winter is one of my most treasured memories.

  11. congratulations!!! :^D)

as far as inspiration, flickr has many groups with craft rooms, art studios, etc., and you can lose hours browsing there!

as far as sharing with children, i found (after many years of sharing space) that i needed to have an equivalent child-size version of my own space — a desk for me, a desk for them, etc. and i found that some kind of low, soft seating with a *small* book storage (basket or wooden crate or very small bookshelf) worked well. i don't think a lot of space is required, especially if you use flexible pieces (like a low desk/table that can be used for writing or playing computer or drawing/painting).

    so happy for you!! :^)
